Personal Project: Tate Modern

The centre of South Bank, London

A museum’s architecture shouldn’t be its best exhibit, but here it steals the show.
Tate Modern, Bankside
Tate holds the national collection of British art from 1900 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art.

It is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world.
The Switch House, postmodernism
The new spaces are connected with the existing galleries – an architecture that allows for flexibility, improvisation, adaptation and change.

The hope for postmodernism lies in the sense of new possibilities combined with a willingness to learn from past architectural achievements.
Insertions into Ideological Circuits: Coca-Cola Project 1970
The ‘Coca-Cola Project’ is made up of a row of three modified Coca-Cola bottles filled with varying amounts of cola inside them. The bottles have been altered with subversive messages.

The bottles are the remnants of a socio-political, artistic action or performance which encouraged citizens to share the subversive messages printed on the bottles. Meireles removed Coca-Cola bottles from normal circulation and modified them by adding critical political statements.

A form of language, a system essentially opposed to the media of press, radio and television – typical examples of media that actually reach an enormous audience.
Millennium Bridge, London
Tate Modern is based in the former Bankside Power Station, in the Bankside area of the London Borough of Southwark.
